Boldness in Bloom - 2024 Spring Campaign

Virtual Production Supervisor

CG & Animation Lead

In collaboration with Director Joe Sill, I lead the Impossible Objects team in what I call a “super combo” virtual production job, where we combined the best aspects of all the available tools.

I personally animated previz in Unreal Engine, while working closely with our VAD Supervisor (& legend) Steven Hensley who oversaw a small team building our various environments.

We then went to our friends at Nant Studios to shoot the ICVFX portion (all vehicle interiors with talent), where I both DP’d and also shared VP Supe responsibilities with Nant’s own Jennifer McSpadden.

All the exteriors where then “upgraded” in fidelity in Unreal Engine, lighting and rendering in Path Tracer. Besides overseeing all aspects of the lighting, I also personally built a render pipeline on AWS to see the CG process through before handing over to our 2D department, where finishing touches were applied in Nuke.

The adventure & challenge of this project was being in charge of both the ICVFX and CGI cinematography.

As the DP and lead CG artist, I was able to ensure that all imagery was cohesive and that all creative intentions where maintained through all departments, both live action and vfx. It's a dream scenario for someone with my background, being able to both compose & light frames so that the virtual world blends with the physical. I also lead the team in lighting and setting up the "End Card" scenes, two of which I have pasted below.
